In a statement made on Thursday, 19 December, the non-governmental organization Citizen Participation is calling on the Attorney General Office to investigate those responsible for the fiscal deficit in 2012. Roberto Alvarez, general coordinator of the civil society movement, said that the demands are based on a report that was prepared by the technical commission of the Economic and Social Commission, a private-public organization, that shows that those responsible for the 2012 deficit committed 24 violations to at least nine laws and the Constitution. Former President Leonel Fernandez and Minister of Economy Temistocles Montas are included among those identified as responsible for the deficit. The report says that it is a highly dangerous practice that was begun in 2008 and accumulated a deficit of RD$53 billion that continued in 2009 and reached RD$56 billion by 2011.
