Holiday grocery shoppers might well consider paying a visit to the new Mercado de Mayoristas de Santo Domingo (Merca Santo Domingo) on the Duarte Highway, north of Santo Domingo. The formal opening of the wholesale market to the general public is scheduled for 26 January, but vendors have already started selling meats, fruits and vegetables to the general public. The attraction is that every day of the week prices are similar to the Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday specials for these food items nationwide at the popular city center mega stores. Merca Santo Domingo spokesman Eusebio Guzman said that they are selling roast pork for the holidays.
Diario Libre reports that tomatoes are selling for RD$15 a lb., eggplant for RD$10 lb, green peppers RD$15 lb, plantains RD$2-RD$6 unit, cassava for RD$7lb, bell peppers RD$30 lb, and lettuce RD$20 lb.
