Pena Suazo score in Golden Globe-winning film

The merengue song “Que no se acabe el mambo” from Jose Pena Suazo’s “Puro mambo” album features in the 2013 Italian film, “The Great Beauty” (La grande bellezza) that won a Golden Globe Best Foreign Language Film Award last weekend.

Pena Suazo says this is not the first time one of his scores has been chosen for a film. He recalls that in 1989, the film Hard Way used his theme “El milloncito” that he wrote for Cuco Valoy.

He said that if a film wins the Golden Globe then it means it has quality, and that if his music is part of that win, then the satisfaction is double.

The comedy-drama is the Italian submission to the Oscars ceremony and the Cannes Festival. Directed by Paolo Sorrentino, it tells the story of journalist Jep Gambardella who has seduced his way through the lavish night party scene of Rome for decades, but after his 65th birthday and a shock from the past, Jep looks past the nightclubs and parties to find a timeless landscape of absurd, exquisite beauty.
