Progress made on Haitian identity cards

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS) has delivered a report to the Ministry of Foreign Relations that details the progress they have made on issuing identity cards to Haitian immigrants in the Dominican Republic. The work is due for completion in the next few weeks.

The meeting took place in the Ministry with the Deputy Minister Cesar Dargam, representing Minister of Foreign Relations Carlos Morales Troncoso, OAS representative Araceli Azuara, the director general of the Haitian National Identification Office (ONI), Jean-Baptiste Silf Saint-Cyr and OAS specialist staff.

At the end of the meeting, Dargam expressed optimism and recalled that President Danilo Medina had offered to provide the necessary installations and infrastructure so that the Haitian government could issue identity documents to their citizens who are in the Dominican Republic as part of a major drive to regularize the immigration status of temporary Haitian workers in the country.

The report estimates the time needed for issuing the identity cards, purchasing materials, transporting equipment and the staff needed.
