Economy Minister denies new taxes or electricity rate increases

Minister of Economy Temistocles Montas said yesterday, Tuesday 18 March that the government would not be introducing new tax reforms or raising the electricity rates. A statement at the conclusion of last week’s visit by the International Monetary Fund mission recommended tax increases and the automatic adjustment mechanism for electricity rates. Montas, who has announced his aspiration to be the PLD candidate in the 2016 presidential election, said:

“The government will continue to rationalize spending so that we can meet our goals in terms of policies to be implemented from now on so as to enter into a gradual debt reduction process,” he said, as reported in Diario Libre.

The IMF warned about the rising high level of government indebtedness in relation to GDP.
