JCE opposes attending another IACHR session

Central Electoral Board (JCE) president Roberto Rosario says that the Dominican Republic should not attend the next session of the Inter-American Commission for Human Rights (IACHR) because, in his view, the court is biased against the country and has already issued its opinion after its recent visit. The IACHR opposes the Dominican government’s plan to legalize immigrants in the Dominican Republic. Rosario sent the press a communication to the Ministry of Foreign Relations notifying it of this position. He said the session would be used to put pressure on the Dominican government.

“We should not, under any circumstances, tolerate pressure on our country from several international organizations with meddling attitudes that violate diplomatic rules and undermine our national sovereignty. It is our duty and that of the Dominican state to preserve the mandates and rules of the Constitution of the Republic, as a free and sovereign country to allow any citizen from abroad to remain in the country providing they are duly registered,” stated Rosario.

The JCE president said it was not up to the IACHR to decide which officials should represent the country. Rosario said that is a right of the Ministry of the Republic.
