Taekwondo international

The Dominican Republic will be hosting the Qualification Tournament for the 2014 Central American and Caribbean Sports Games on 2-3 April 2014. The CACSO Games are scheduled to take place in November 2014 in Veracruz, Mexico.

The competitions will take place at the Juan Pablo Duarte Olympic Center’s Volleyball Pavilion and Combat Pavilion.

Immediately after this event, Santo Domingo will host its most important world taekwondo competition, the Santo Domingo Open International Taekwondo Tournament from 5-6 April 2014 at the Juan Pablo Duarte Olympic Center. Some 1,000 athletes from 40 countries are expected to attend, said Dominican Taekwondo Federation president Francisco Camacho. Camacho said that the country would be the world capital of taekwondo for the event.

The Dominican Republic will be represented by Yohaira Diaz, Candelaria Marte, Yahaira Peguero, Dinansi Polanco, Deysy Montes de Oca, Ana Matos, Mayelin Reyes and Katherine Rodriguez in the women’s categories. The men are: Jhovanny Barthemi, Edward Espinosa, Manuel Guillen, Moises Hernandez, Cesar Martinez, Ruddy Enmanuel Mateo and Kilvio Mejia.

Camacho said that local athletes who did not qualify to compete in the Central American and Caribbean competition will be able to take part, including Beijing Olympics silver medalist Gabriel Mercedes and Luis Pie.
