Officials from the Department of Taxes (DGII) closed down the famous Barra Payan on 30 de Marzo for repeated violations of tax reporting requirements. DGII officials said that the sandwich and drinks place has repeatedly issued bills to consumers without the corresponding tax numbers and that the establishment had been fined before for the same reason.
The owners of the Barra Payan, a landmark among people in the capital, said that they were closed down because of a RD$85,000 fine had not yet been paid. The manager stressed that the fine was now paid in full and that they were promised by the DGII that within 24 hours they could open once more.
