International Cap Cana Billfish Shootout returns to Dominican Republic

The Ministry of Tourism announced the International Cap Cana Billfish Shootout is taking place this coming 4-11 June at the Cap Cana Marina in Punta Cana. The event, in its 20th year, is considered the grand prix of billfish tournaments.

In addition to world-class fishing, a full-week of accompanying festivities is planned including beach parties, golfing, and culinary competitions.

“We’re thrilled to once again partner with the event and help them celebrate 20 years of success,” said Magaly Toribio, marketing advisor for the Dominican Republic Ministry of Tourism. “Dominican Republic has a long-standing history as a major fishing destination thanks to location, as well as first-class facilities and hospitality. We look forward to our ongoing growth and success in the sport.”

The billfish season in Dominican Republic typically runs from April to August each year. May and June are the best months for white marlin, while August is typically when the largest blue marlins are caught.

The Ministry explains that over the past few years, marlin numbers have thrived on the east coast due to the favorable environment and the installment of fish-attracting devices (FADs). These numbers were recognized by Billfish Report, which named the country the World’s Top Billfish Destination in 2013.

The tournament host location, Marina Cap Cana, is just seven minutes from Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ) and offers five-star accommodations and 130 slips for the competition. The tournament ends on 10 June with an awards gala held at AlSol Luxury Village. A portion of event proceeds will be donated to local children’s charities.
