Tourists staying in the Punta Cana-Bavaro resorts this winter season will be able to travel all the way north to the beaches of Miches, following an announcement from the Ministry of Public Works that an initial 72 km stretch of the newly paved two-lane road connecting Miches with Uvero Alto will be ready this December.
The second half of the work, approximately 50 km from Miches to Sabana de la Mar will be completed by August 2015, according to project director Fernando Soarez of Odebrecht, the contractor.
The roadway, which bypasses the towns and villages along the route, includes 39 bridges, 29 of which already existed.
The completed highway will cost US$265 million.
The project includes the construction of a terminal for the ferry that connects Sabana de la Mar with Samana. The plan is to open up day trips for tourists staying in Punta Cana to visit Samana.
The highway has a total length of 110.8 kilometers. Construction began in January 2013. It is an extension of the Eastern Corridor that starts with Las Americas Expressway, continues through the Autovia del Este and the Autopista del Coral, the Boulevard del Este.
