The National Police chief, Major General Manuel Castro Castillo says that deaths from violent incidents are down 60% since May when the new 911 emergency service entered into operation in Greater Santo Domingo.
Major General Castro Castillo reported that they are now training 1,200 police agents, of which 978 will be part of 163 new National Police patrol units that will work in quadrants to substantially improve the police presence in Santiago. The police chief described the 911 system as modern and efficient during the delivery of 50 pickup trucks for Santiago police patrols.
He announced that the government will soon be expanding the 911 emergency service to the city of Santiago and that the new patrols and the pickup trucks will be part of the program. He added that the 911 system would be expanded to San Cristobal, Puerto Plata and Haina next.
“We are convinced that we are on the right side, anyone who commits a crime will face the strong arm of the law, knowing that if they infringe the laws they will pay with the loss of their freedom,” he stated.
