Hoy-Gallup poll on political candidates for 2016

The latest Gallup-Hoy poll reveals that when asked who should be the candidate for the ruling PLD party in the upcoming May 2016 presidential election, voters are divided between Danilo Medina being the candidate (48.5%), followed by Leonel Fernandez (16.8%), Margarita Cedeno (5.3%), Reinaldo Pared Perez (4.7%), and Francisco Javier Garcia (4.6%). 14.1% said they did not know.

Margarita Cedeno is the wife of President Leonel Fernandez, Reinaldo Pared Perez is senator for the National District and a former president of the Senate, and Francisco Javier Garcia is a long time Minister of Tourism.

For the PRD, the voters mentioned Miguel Vargas Maldonado (31%), Guido Gomez Mazara (5.1%) and former UASD rector Franklin Garcia Fermin (3.3%). 42.3% said they do not know who should be the candidate.

For the PRD dissidents, now in the Partido Revolucionario Mayoritario (now Moderno), voters believe the candidate should be Luis Abinader (35.8%) or former President Hipolito Mejia (13.4%). 41.3% of those polled had no answer.

For the PRSC, the voters mentioned the senator for the province of La Altagracia Amable Aristy (23.5%), followed by Foreign Minister Carlos Morales Troncoso (7.5%), deputy Ito Bisono (7%) and party president Quique Antun (3.6%). 55.5% didn’t have an answer or did not know.

Among the minority parties, Guillermo Moreno (Alianza Pais) received a mention of 25.1%, followed by Eduardo Estrella (Partido Dominicanos por el Cambio) with 9.3%.

For the poll, 1,200 eligible voters were interviewed between 29 August and 2 September 2014. The margin of error is 2.8%.

The next presidential election is scheduled for May 2016. President Danilo Medina is banned from re-election. In 2004, then-President Hipolito Mejia changed the Constitution to allow one-time consecutive re-election, US-style. In 2008, PRD president Miguel Vargas accepted a change to the Constitution to allow non-consecutive re-election in the 2010 Constitution. Thus, the tradition has been to change the constitution according to the convenience of the serving President. This could explain why Gallup is including Danilo Medina in the list of candidates.
