A young Dominican dancer, Saray Ortega Tejada, described in press reports as a former girlfriend of popular singer Don Miguelo, managed to avoid the checks of the National Drug Control Agency (DNCD) and the Specialized Corps of Airport Security and Civil Aviation (CESAC) at Las Americas International Airport last week, but was arrested and found to be in possession of 3.3 lbs of cocaine when she arrived in New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport on Tuesday, 9 September 2014.
According to the US Customs and Border Protection, the woman had the drugs in a laptop case.
Ortega Tejada had left the country on a commercial flight and on arrival in the United States the CBP officials noticed that her laptop case was unusually heavy and thicker than normal.
Saray Ortega Tejada now faces federal drugs charges and will appear before prosecutors in New York.
