The Egg Production Association (Asohuevos) has expressed its opposition to a government plan to authorize the importation of chickens to force the price down by increasing supply.
Association president Manuel Escano confirmed that a pound of chicken is still expensive with current retail prices ranging from RD$49 to RD$58.
He said that the Ministry of Agriculture’s role was to balance supply and demand but that he thought that a pound of chicken should not sell for more than RD$45.
He said that more chickens would be available in time. At the moment, 21 million eggs a month are being incubated.
Escano said that importing chickens would affect the livelihoods of hundreds of Dominican poultry farmers.
