Public prosecutors on strike

Public Prosecutors have confirmed that they will be holding a national strike today, Tuesday 16 September 2014, including non-attendance at court, in demand of a salary increase and a larger budget in 2015.

The strike was called by the Movement for Dignity for the Public Prosecution Service in the Dominican Republic, to which most prosecutors belong. They claim that they have discovered that their allocation in the 2015 National Budget has not been increased, and will remain at RD$3.25 billion.

The Foundation for Institutionalism and Justice (Finjus) announced its support for the strike.

According to spokesman Pedro Amador Espinosa, public prosecutors will be on strike in 17 provinces today.

In February 2013, prosecutors’ salaries were increased from RD$60,000 to RD$69,000 a month and court prosecutors’ salaries went up from RD$85,000 to RD$97,000.
