Medina meets George Soros in New York

President Danilo Medina met with business magnate and philanthropist George Soros on Tuesday, 23 September 2014, as part of his agenda in New York City where he traveled to attend the 69th General Assembly of the United Nations. As reported by the Presidency, Medina and Soros spent about half an hour discussing Soros’ interest in the National Foreigner Legalization Plan, and Soros expressed his willingness to support initiatives aimed at providing Haitians with legal documentation. Most Haitians living in Haiti do not have legal documentation, which has caused major problems when they immigrate to the Dominican Republic where identity papers are required.

The Presidency said that Soros also showed an interest in the early childhood programs being implemented by the government. Medina described the program to build 100 daycare centers nationwide.

Administrative Minister of the Presidency Jose Ramon Peralta was also present at the meeting.

Hungarian-born Soros is considered to be among the world’s 10 richest men, with a fortune estimated at more than US$24 billion, according to Forbes magazine. He is the founder of the Open Society Foundations, a grant-making network that aims to shape public policy to promote democratic governance, human rights and economic, legal and social reform.
