More blackouts expected as arrears increase

The Dominican Electricity Industry Association (ADIE) reports that the government has accumulated a debt of US$905 million in arrears, a new record, according to a story in Hoy.

This is up from US$818 million in August 2014. ADIE says this affects the capacity of the generators to supply the service, and plant shutdowns are likely to cause increased blackouts. ADIE reported that at this time of the year, two years ago the debt was at US$580 million.

ADIE says that the power distributors, now managed by the government, have not been capable of collecting for the power served, accumulating a deficit of around 33%.

As reported in Hoy, the power distributors bought power on average at 16.6 US dollar cents and sold it at 18.5 cents (US$).
