New hospital director will not impose penalties

The new director of the Robert Reid Cabral Children’s Public Hospital, Dr. Jose Miguel Ferreras has assured that he has no plans to penalize anyone. He said he wants to work together with the staff to solve the problems affecting the hospital.

Yesterday morning, Tuesday 14 October 2014, he held his first meeting with the heads of the departments at the hospital to hear the main needs. He said that he had received his training as a pediatrician in the hospital in the 1980s and that most of the doctors working there were his friends, so he was confident that they could work together in harmony and do everything possible for the patients.

Dr. Ferreras was appointed after Listin Diario headlined that 11 children had died at the hospital in one weekend. The story provoked widespread outrage and led the government to take action to resolve the long-standing problems at the hospital that hospital staff had tried to report on numerous occasions.
