An armed gang of 20 men tried to kidnap a Venezuelan businessman, Luis Rios Virla from the Holiday Inn hotel in Santo Domingo.
Rios Virla arrived in the Dominican Republic on Monday, 25 October 2014, reportedly to collect more than US$2 million from a banking institution.
Lawyer Amadeo Peralta, representing the businessman, said that the armed gang arrived at the Holiday Inn at 6am, supposedly to take his client to jail, without a warrant or a public prosecutor.
Eight Police units then arrived and handcuffed all of the men. The gang leader did not want to reveal his name, and said he had merely come to look for Rios Virla and that he had a warrant to take him to jail. He did not produce the warrant.
