Falling fuel prices mean less tax for government

The Medina administration will need to find new sources of taxation now that the price of fuel is constantly dropping and this means reduced income from hydrocarbon taxation. Industry and Commerce Minister Jose del Castillo Savinon says that if the current downward trend in fuel prices continues, the government could receive RD$800 million less in hydrocarbon taxes.

The government has yet to consider cutting its own wasteful spending. Instead, Castillo commented that to compensate for the difference, “there will have to be a tax adjustment.”
