Frank Kelin Holguin Medina, accused of the arson attack on the Santo Domingo Metro on Monday, 27 October 2014, tried to hang himself in his cell at the Centro de Correccion y Rehabilitacion in San Pedro de Macoris on Friday, 31 October 2014. He then tried to electrocute himself when taken to the Palacio de Justicia in Santo Domingo for the hearing where he was given a year of preventive custody.
The authorities are investigating the motives behind the crime, which they say could be either terrorism or mental illness. In the fire, two were seriously burned of around 35 injured.
