Attorney General office spokeswoman Tessie Sanchez said on Wednesday, 12 November 2014 that St. Louis Cardinals rookie outfielder 22-year old Oscar Taveras was legally drunk when he lost control of his Chevy Camaro while driving on the Cabarete-Sosua road in Puerto Plata on 26 October 2014. Taveras and his 18-year old girlfriend were killed in the accident.
After the findings were released, Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak issued a statement saying that the team has “an obligation to use this as an opportunity to educate our players that they must take responsibility for themselves both on and off the field.”
Taveras was one of the most promising emerging players in the Major Leagues. In his first season he had hit .239 with three homers and 22 RBIs in 80 games. In his debut he had homered against the 2014 MLB champion San Francisco Giants team on 31 May 2014.
