According to the director of the National Council for HIV and AIDS (CONAVIHSIDA) Victor Terrero, the Dominican Republic has the second highest number of cases in Latin America and the Caribbean, with Haiti in first place.
According to Terrero, around 45,000 people in this country have the virus, which is a rate of 0.8% and a 35% reduction in cases since 2003. The number of deaths has also reduced from 2,690 cases in 2007 to 1,799 this year.
Speaking on World Aids Day, yesterday, Monday 1 December 2014, he said that the most vulnerable members of the population were gay and transsexual people, sex workers and young people. Most of those infected were between the ages of 15 and 49.
Terrero asked for more funds from the private sector to finance HIV/AIDS programs to buy retroviral medicines and help people who are living with the virus.
