The Dominican Republic exported more than US$100 million worth of greenhouse vegetables in 2014, which confirms that agriculture is among the country’s most dynamic sectors.
The Agriculture Ministry’s Protected Environment Production Dept. (Deprobap) said that the country exported US$111.6 million worth of vegetables during that period or US$15 million more than the US$96.1 million in 2013.
It said the additional production results from the 933.6 million square meters of new nurseries mostly in the south and Greater Santo Domingo (601,836), the northwest (274,942), and the east, mainly La Romana (56,800).
The total amount of vegetables produced in these protected environments in 2014 was 140.3 million pounds, or 17.8 million more than the previous period, when 122.5 million pounds of greenhouse vegetables were produced.
