Miners protest blocking of labor union

Workers from Barrick Pueblo Viejo mine held a protest at the Barrick headquarters in Santo Domingo yesterday, Tuesday 9 December 2014 asking for a salary increase, better working conditions and the right to join a trade union.

According to Jacobo David Colon, General Secretary of the Union for Workers at Barrick, they decided to hold a protest as they have been trying to negotiate for recognition of their rights as established by the Labor Code since 2010 but they have been ignored.

The peaceful protest took place on Lopez de Vega Avenue and union leader Pepe Abreu said that this multinational company could negotiate with workers from other parts of the world but refused to negotiate with Dominican workers.

Barrick did not send a representative to meet with the protesters and both Abreu and Colon warned that if they continued to refuse to speak to the workers, the protests would intensify next year.
