Haitians violently prevent arrest of fishermen

Haitian protestors demanded the release of three fishermen who had been arrested for illegal fishing in Dominican waters off Pedernales in the south west. The Haitians were then released. They were arrested by the Armada on Wednesday, 31 December 2014. Haitian protestors aggressively demanded the release and held two Dominican fishermen Edgar Hernandez and Wilson Gonzalez in retaliation for the arrest of their Haitians. The fishermen were rescued by the Haitian police to prevent the Dominicans from being harmed. The two Dominican fishermen were exchanged for the three Haitian fishermen at 6pm on Saturday 3 January 2015. In the morning, the Haitians threw rocks at the Cesfront border patrol guards, broke the door of the Customs Department and the border gate. No injuries were reported, but the bi-national market in Dajabon was suspended. The chief of Cesfront, General Carlos Manuel Aguirre Reyes said that consulate staff Zaida Polanco, Jacobito Espinal and military officers Domingo Solis and Angel Estevez took refuge in the Dominican consulate in Anse-a-Pitre until the row was resolved.

The two Dominican fishermen said their lives were saved thanks to the intervention of the Minustah (UN peacekeepers in Haiti) and several Haitian citizens who knew them.
