Former Senate president Ramon Alburquerque has announced his aspiration to be the presidential candidate for the Partido Revolucionario Moderno (PRM), the PRD dissident party in the May 2016 election. Alburquerque served as senator in 1990-1994, 1994-1998, 1998-2002 and 2002-2006. He also presided the Senate for three periods 1998-99, 1999-2000 and 2000-2001 and was president of the PRD from 2005 to 2009.
Now Alburquerque is best known as the host of the radio talk show, Los Sabios en la Z (The Wise Men on the Z) on Z101 on Sundays.
Alburquerque is a chemistry graduate from the University of Kansas in the United States, and he has a masters and doctorate in mines and energy from the University of Colorado School of Mines.
Other PRM pre-candidacy hopefuls are Luis Abinader, former vice presidential candidate for the PRD in the 2012 presidential election, and former President Hipolito Mejia.
In a press release, Alburquerque called for the PRM structures to be formalized, for its voting list to be developed, and for preparing the ground for the candidate of the organization to be chosen in primaries.
