Crocodiles and iguanas under threat

Predators including fishermen are depleting the numbers of iguanas and American crocodiles around Lake Enriquillo and the authorities will have to intervene quickly to stop their extinction.

Jose Antonio Matos Pena told El Caribe that both crocodiles and the iguanas are looking for fresh water that is not as salty as the lake water and as they move towards the edge of the lake they are being hunted and killed for food.

He said he had proof that seven iguanas and one adult crocodile had been killed by a group of fishermen who lived on the west part of the lake, used illegal weapons and fished in the area.
