The army, the Specialized Border Security Corps (Cesfront) and the Dominican Armada (Navy) have detained at least 8,300 Haitians as they were trying to cross into the Dominican Republic by land and sea in the provinces of Dajabon and Montecristi.
The head of the Tenth Infantry Battalion of the Dominican Army in Dajabon, Colonel Made Guerrero, told local media that other illegal immigrants were arrested when they were coming over the mountains trying to get to Santiago, the main destination for illegal migrants crossing in the north of the country.
He said that on Monday, 5 January 2015, they handed over 300 Haitians who had entered the county illegally to the Immigration Department. Others were found walking in woods and isolated tracks. He said that this takes the number arrested in the last two weeks to 8,300 and that the figure was high as many who were already living here had gone back to Haiti for the holidays and were now trying to return accompanied by their relatives, friends and neighbors.
He went on to say that many of those arrested were pregnant women, coming to the country to give birth.
