Fishermen found an injured baby humpback whale in the shallow waters of the beach of Estero Balsa in Manzanillo Bay off the northwest coast yesterday, Wednesday 7 January 2015. With the help of local people, the fishermen were able to treat the wounds and return the huge animal back to deeper Atlantic Ocean waters.
According to Listin Diario, the whale measured some 30m long and was beached on the shore. The fisherman informed the Ministry of the Environment in the province of Montecristi.
Hundreds of people from the surrounding area came to see this large creature, expressing awe at seeing the whale so close up.
According to the newspaper, heavy equipment was used to move and treat the whale. Experts say that whales sometimes get lost, and in this case it entered Manzanillo Bay, where it was probably struck by a ship entering or leaving the harbor.
