The Chamber of Deputies has passed the bill for adding the name of pitcher Juan Marichal to the Quisqueya Ball Park. President Danilo Medina is expected to sign the bill into law today, Friday 9 January 2015. The stadium will be known as the Quisqueya Juan Marichal Ball Park. The bill, which was fast-tracked through the Chamber, had already passed in the Senate.
The initiative passed coinciding with the appointment of another Dominican pitcher, Pedro Martinez to the Cooperstown Hall of Fame. Marichal was inducted in 1983. The Quisqueya Stadium was built in 1955 when it opened with the name of Estadio Trujillo in honor of the dictator. It has a capacity for 11,379 seated spectators and was renovated in 2014.
