New ID now required

It was a busy week for the Central Electoral Board (JCE) after thousands of people scrambled and made long lines after leaving the renewal of the card for the last few days to get their ID cards. The JCE had said the old cedulas would expire on Saturday, 10 January 2015.

A total of 2,118,438 out of 7,373,568 Dominicans did not renew their ID cards within the required timeframe.

The JCE announced that 5,715,299 people were issued tickets to renew their IDs, of which 5,255,130 citizens registered their data. 51,568 are now being processed for 5,306,698 applicants who provided their data to the system. Of the renewal requests now in the system, 51,568 documents are being processed and ready for delivery.

During the process, 3,386,388 changed addresses, 2,397,652 people provided their blood type, 1,319,363 changed their occupations, and 299,217 changed their civil status, among other changes.

Diario Libre reports that 460,000 people were admitted for the start of the change procedure but have not received their ID cards for multiple reasons.

As reported in Diario Libre, the Commercial Banks Association (ABA) said that banks would continue to accept the old ID card as a valid identification.
