United States calls meeting to discuss energy

On 12 January 2015, the Office of the US Vice President announced plans to convene heads of state from Caribbean nations to Washington, D.C. to discuss energy issues. The first Caribbean Energy Security Summit will be held on 26 January 2015.

US Vice President Biden’s office says prime ministers or cabinet ministers from the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Grenada, and Trinidad and Tobago are expected to attend.

The White House says the summit will focus on promoting a cleaner and more sustainable energy future in the Caribbean through improved energy governance, greater access to finance and donor coordination.

As announced, the summit is a key component of the Caribbean Energy Security Initiative that the Vice President had announced in June 2014, and will be hosted by the White House and the State Department in partnership with the Atlantic Council and the Council of the Americas. The agenda includes an energy security roundtable with heads of government, and meetings and events with government officials, representatives from the private sector, and officials from multilateral institutions.
