Yet another type of visa may be issued for foreign residents

Due to the low number of people who have complied with the requisites for status legalization under the National Foreigner Legalization Plan, Interior and Police Minister Jose Ramon (Monchy) Fadul has announced that he is proposing issuing a new non-resident visa that would be valid for two years.

Fadul says that in this way, beneficiaries could opt for a migration category and that the proposal would be made this month.

As of Friday 9 January 2015, 123,045 people had registered under the Legalization Plan, and 5,345 people had registered under Law 169-14 for those born in the country but not registered properly.

Speaking on the El Despertador TV show on Color Vision, Fadul said that one of the reasons for the low level of compliance is that many employers did not want to provide proof that Haitians were working for them and would not help them in the regularization process. He said that a non-resident visa was something that he would discuss with other government departments. He said this would give the Dominican population more time to understand the importance of legalizing all foreigners in the country, not just Haitians, so they could continue living here without concerns.
