Garcia Padilla would give vote to immigrants

Puerto Rican Governor Alejandro Garcia Padilla says that his administration would submit legislation aimed at allowing immigrants to vote in the next Puerto Rican elections, regardless of their migratory status. Dominicans make up what is thought to be the largest immigrant group in Puerto Rico.

The announcement was made in the presence of President Danilo Medina who visited the neighboring island yesterday, Tuesday 13 January 2015 for the signing of 10 bilateral agreements. “In this country, we will all vote,” Padilla told his audience at the Puerto Rico Convention Center where the signing of the agreements took place.

He said there are precedents in other US jurisdictions where immigrants are allowed to vote.
