Justice Department seeks remand for Dican defendants

In the next few hours, the General Prosecutor of the Appeals Court of the province of Santo Domingo will submit a preventive custody request for 14 of the 25 people implicated in the alleged theft of 950 kg of cocaine seized by the National Police Central Directorate for Anti-Narcotics (Dican). The request will be heard by the judge of Special Instruction of the Penal Chamber of the Court of Appeals, Wendy Martinez Mejia. The Justice Department is preparing the charges that it will use in order to achieve the strictest coercive measures established in article 226 of the Penal Process Code.

Yesterday, Wednesday 14 January 2015, two of the officers for whom arrest warrants were issued and who had not yet been arrested, turned themselves in. Corporal Agapito Munoz Evangelista and Sergeant Pedro Jose Almanzar Gonzalez appeared in court accompanied by their lawyers Leonardio Almonte and Rafael Ruiz.

Meanwhile, arrest warrants were issued for prosecutor Leonidas Suarez Martinez and colonels Mercedes Altagracia Mola Cuevas and Guillermo Baez Ubiera. There are also warrants for lieutenant colonels Voltaire Batista Matos, Juan Bulus Andujar and Francisco Valenzuela Valenzuela. Also included in the warrants are Major Junio Vasquez Baez, Major Alberto Jimenez Ruiz, captains Carlos Amezquita Reynoso and Edwin La Paix Zapata, Lieutenant Juanico Belen Mejia and one civilian, Santo Emilio Hernandez.
