Growing GDP gap will increase migratory pressure

During his address to the First Dominican Diplomacy Forum yesterday, Thursday 15 January 2015, Minister of Economy Temistocles Montas spoke of the trend for increasing inequalities between the Dominican Republic and Haiti. According to forecast made in The Millennium Project: Latin America 2030 and the Frederick S. Pardee Center for International Futures of the University of Denver, the population of the island, currently at 20 million, will reach 25 million by 2030. The Gross Domestic Product per capita of the DR is estimated to increase from US$5,296 in 2010 to US$12,000 in 2030. Meanwhile, Haiti’s GDP per capita is estimated to go from US$720 in 2010 to US$1,043 in 2030. “That means that the gap in income between both countries will be expanded if the present trends are maintained,” he said. He stressed that this would increase the migratory pressure from Haiti to the DR if the present migratory flows were not organized.

He also called for a two-way communication on what is being done domestically and what is projected abroad.

Montas was speaking at the Forum taking place from 14-16 January 2015 at the Ministry of Foreign Relations on the occasion of the launch of the Medina administration’s new foreign policies.
