New Bavaro-Miches road inaugurated

President Danilo Medina was in Punta Cana yesterday, Thursday 15 January 2015 for the inauguration of the Bavaro-Uvero Alto-Miches highway stretch. This 72km stretch of paved highway was opened over the holidays. It is part of the Eastern Highway Corridor that crosses La Altagracia province. Built by the Brazilian firm Odebrecht at a cost of US$267 million, it benefits 11 local communities and is considered essential for the development of beach destinations in the Miches area. Public Works Minister Gonzalo Castillo gave the keynote speech.

The road will continue with the addition of the last 39km stretch from Miches to Sabana de la Mar by the end of 2015. Sabana de la Mar is a major port city and the main base for excursions to Los Haitises National Park.

Tourism Minister Francisco Javier Garcia, El Seibo provincial Governor Jesus Rafael Mejia, Eastern Hotels and Tourism Projects Association president Ernesto Veloz, and leading east coast businessmen Frank Rainieri of the Puntacana Group and Venezuelan businessman Gustavo Cisneros, the leading developer in the Miches area were also present at the event.

Archbishop of La Altagracia Monsignor Nicanor Pena blessed the new road.
