Hato Mayor drug enforcement staff pulled

The entire staff of the National Drug Control Agency (DNCD) in Hato Mayor was removed after a local woman revealed she had retired from the drug dealing business because of all the bribes demanded by law enforcement agents.

The couple making the accusation met with Police chief Major General Manuel Castro Castillo for two hours yesterday, Sunday 18 January 2015. Crisania Mercedes Soriano and Engel Santana are being kept in Police custody for their own protection. Interviewed on a TV program earlier this month, Soriano admitted that she used to sell drugs and reported having to pay the law enforcement authorities in charge of combating drug trafficking in the area RD$100,000 a week.

Soriano said she and her husband had to leave their home after the interview was aired.

Agents of the DNCD, the Police Criminal Investigations Department (Dicrim) and the Police Anti Narcotics Department (Dican) based in Hato Mayor have been arrested as part of the investigation by police internal affairs director General Orlando Martinez Pichardo.
