Altagracia Day safety plans begin

The Emergency Operations Center (COE) has announced that operation “Our Lady of Altagracia 2015” will start at 2pm today, Tuesday 20 January 2015 with 3,521 people deployed at strategic locations along highways and roads leading to La Altagracia province (Higuey).

COE director General Juan Manuel Mendez said that the operation would end at 6pm on Wednesday 21st, Altagracia Day, and was aimed at preventing and responding to any emergencies that might arise.

He said that 101 assistance posts are being set up, 51 in the east of the country and another 50 along highways leading there, to help pilgrims heading to La Altagracia province.

In addition, 30 ambulances will be based at key points to respond to accidents and a helicopter has been assigned to cover the area.

Two medical centers and a coordination center have been set up inside the grounds of the Basilica in Higuey, the focus of the pilgrimage.
