The 2016 Latin America Amateur Championship will be held at Casa de Campo’s award-winning Teeth of the Dog golf course in the Dominican Republic from 14-17 January 2016. The announcement was made during this year’s championship being held in Buenos, Aires, Argentina.
The event awards a ticket to compete in the annual Masters at Augusta National Golf Club Masters and an exemption into final qualifying for the US Open and Open Championship.
In addition, the winner and the runner(s)-up will be exempt into the final stages of qualifying for The Open and US Open Championship. Finally, the champion will receive full exemptions into The Amateur Championship, US Amateur Championship and any other USGA amateur championship for which he is eligible.
The Latin American Amateur was created to create a path for aspiring golfers. A total of 109 golfers from South and Central America, the Caribbean and Mexico are expected. The event was founded by the Masters Tournament, the R&A and the United States Golf Association (USGA).
Teeth of the Dog is the highest-ranked golf course in the Dominican Republic. It was ranked by Golf Magazine as the No. 1 course in the Caribbean and 43rd worldwide. It is routinely ranked as one of the best in all of Latin America and the Caribbean.
Casa de Campo was named the number-one golf resort in the world by the International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO) for its combination of golf courses, professional facilities, luxury amenities, as well as its executive team’s commitment to service and exceeding guest expectations.
The LAAC follows a model established by the Masters and The R&A when, in 2009, the organizations created the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship (AAC) to advance the sport in that part of the world and to create heroes other aspiring golfers could emulate. The event in the Asia-Pacific region has been an astonishing success with the likes of Hideki Matsuyama and Tianlang Guan winning the championship and going on to make an impact in the Masters Tournament and on the PGA Tour. Australia’s Antonio Murdaca won the 2014 championship at Royal Melbourne and will have an opportunity to make his mark this year.
