DR tourism arrivals continued to climb

During 2014 the Dominican Republic reached a record number of 5,141,377 non-resident arrivals, of whom 4,464,643 were foreigners and 676,734 were Dominicans. This is a growth of 451,607 additional visitors compared to 2013.

Central Bank figures show a recovery in the flow of non-resident Dominicans in relation to 2013, showing an increase of 51,718 visitors last year. In December, the country received 429,494 non-resident foreigners for a growth of 6.9%, which in absolute terms represents 27,651 additional tourists with relation to December 2013. This situation, according to Central Bank statisticians is due to growth in travel from the United States, the main source market. The strategies implemented by the Ministry of Tourism in partnership with the private sector are also credited.

An analysis of passenger arrivals by port of origin shows that 2014 closed with an increase of 238,972 non-resident foreigners from North America, divided into 206,617 from the United States, 24,354 from Canada and 8,001 from Mexico. Travel from Europe continues to improve, and registered a growth of 5.3%, bringing 57,750 additional tourists, in contrast to the decrease of 13,320 passengers registered in 2013.

In global terms the non-resident foreigners who arrived were 2,573,409 from North America, which represents 57.6% of the total, of which 1,829,455 came from the United States, 712,245 came from Canada and 31,709 from Mexico. A total of 1,138,194 tourists came from Europe, with 25.5% from Germany (230,318), France (219,076), Russia (175,782), Spain (146,798) and the United Kingdom (124,483). The arrival of 535,292 tourists was registered from South America (12% of the total), providing the remaining 4.9% of the passengers from Central America and the Caribbean, and Asia with 207,032, 8015 and 2701 passengers, respectively.

Most air tourists arrived at Punta Cana International Airport, which received 328,597 additional tourists. Of this total, 187,447 came from the United States, followed by 26,729 more from Canada, 15,630 more from Colombia, 14,829 more from Puerto Rico, and 13,548 more from Brazil.
