The Santo Domingo Aqueduct and Sewer Corporation (CAASD) announced yesterday, Wednesday 21 January 2015 that in order to repair a “large scale breakdown,” some 120 sectors would have their water supply cut off as of today, Thursday 22, until Monday, 26 January. This will affect large areas of the National District and Santo Domingo West. The breakdown occurred on Bethania Street opposite the Ana Ivelise I building in the San Benito sector in Santo Domingo West.
“More than 120 sectors will experience some level of deficiency in the water service, due to low pressure in the distribution lines, since the Valdesia aqueduct supply will be reduced by 40%, i.e. some 60 millions of gallons of water per day,” announced CAASD deputy director of operations Luis Salcedo.
Meanwhile, CAASD deputy director of Community and Social Affairs Arismendy Santana said that this break “in a 12-inch steel pipe, which drains a low point in the 67 inch pipe from the Valdesia system, was scheduled for repair some months ago,” but it had not been done in order to avoid affecting nearly one million people during the last drought, which lasted during nine and a half months.
