The National Drug Control Agency (DNCD) has captured another three members of what they call a “powerful” international drug-dealing ring that sends mules from the Dominican Republic to European countries.
These new arrests are linked to the same organization that recruits travelers to transport drugs to several countries in Europe, mainly Germany, Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands and Switzerland.
The three latest arrests were made in the car park of a commercial center on the San Isidro Highway in Santo Domingo East, in Doctor Baez Santini Street in Azua in the southwest and in the case of the third, a woman handed herself in to the DNCD headquarters in the National District of Santo Domingo on Sunday, 25 January 2015.
Apparently she decided to hand herself in as members of the Special Investigation Division were hot on her heels after arresting two of her accomplices.
DNCD spokesman Dario Medrano said that he could not reveal their identities, as they had not yet appeared in court, but that they all had properly authorized arrest warrants.
The previous arrests included gang leader Francisco Alberto Almonte Amador.
Investigations aimed at dismantling the network started in March 2013 with the arrest of two mules, Yismel Pujols Pena and Daniel Villar while they were trying to leave carrying drugs from Las Americas Airport on a flight to Spain. Since then, DNCD agents have been monitoring suspected group members by taking videos and photographs of coordination meetings held to recruit the mules.
