Puerto Plata Tourism Cluster president Maximo Iglesias says that hotel occupancy rates by international tourists in the province have continued to increase.
He said that according to reports received from local hotel owners, in some cases they were at 95% capacity. He went on to say that the increase in occupancy started after the area was re-launched as a tourist destination.
Association of Hotels and Tourism (Asonahores) statistics director Julio de Moya told Diario Libre that occupancy rates for the year would be available after 7 February, the cut-off date for reporting the year’s results.
According to the Central Bank, in 2014, Puerto Plata province received around 362,145 foreign visitors, of whom 69% were from the United States and the rest from Europe.
In October 2015, Amber Cove, the new Carnival cruise ship terminal is scheduled to open in Maimon, Puerto Plata. The port is expected to bring around 100,000 cruise ship travelers to the province every year.
