Study shows poverty stalled in 2013 in DR

Poverty levels stalled in the Dominican Republic, as well as in most of Latin America from 2012 to 2013, according to a study presented on Monday, 26 January 2015 by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) at their annual meeting in Santiago, Chile.

The study, “Social Panorama of Latin America 2014” was conducted in order to contribute to a more comprehensive design of public policies aimed at overcoming poverty and socioeconomic inequality, and examines recent trends in social spending and sets out a deeper gap analysis focused on three areas: youth and development, gender inequality in the labor market and urban residential segregation.

The document found that Paraguay, El Salvador, Colombia, Peru and Chile were countries that showed significant declines in poverty and extreme poverty.

The report estimates that 47.5% of people lived in poverty and another 24.6% in extreme poverty in the Dominican Republic around 2005. Around 2012 the number had declined to 41.2% poverty level and 20% extreme poverty, but poverty reduction has slowed. The Dominican figures for 2013 are 40.7% poverty and 20.2% extreme poverty.
