For the third time, thousands of people assembled in front of the National Congress building to ask legislators to modify the Constitution in order to restore presidential re-election and permit President Danilo Medina to be re-nominated.
“The People Command” movement leader Abel Tejada served as the spokesman for the representatives of some 20 groups taking part in the “protest.” He said that there was still time to modify the Constitution and asked the legislators to put the issue on their agenda when the next session opens on 27 February 2015. He recalled that they came to Congress to call the attention of the senators and deputies to this issue and had submitted documents with their request on 18 September and 6 November 2014.
Senator Rafael Calderon met with the demonstrators and promised to take their letter to Senate president Cristina Lizardo and the other senators. Deputies Angel Ramirez (Rico), Frank Soto, Hugo Fortuna, and Tulio Jimenez came out to show their support. Ramirez said that 50% of the PLD bloc of deputies supported presidential re-election. Meanwhile, Fortuna said he was sure that the PLD political committee would meet and accept “the will of the people, who are clamoring” for Medina to be nominated again.” Jimenez said that there was still time to reform the Constitution.
