Russian consumers will soon be able to enjoy papayas, pineapples, passion fruit, mangoes and avocados from the Dominican Republic, thanks to the Panorama Company that will soon be making its first shipment of local produce to Russia.
According to El Caribe newspaper, the venture is the result of work by two Russian companies aimed at obtaining an opening in the market for the Dominican Republic. The companies will also source poultry here, said Virginia Velasquez de Simo, the Russian Federation’s honorary consul in the Dominican Republic.
The new opportunity for DR produce opened up after a trade embargo was imposed on Russia over its policy in the Ukraine.
Velasquez points out that there are 18 weekly flights to Russia with a capacity of carrying 20 tons of merchandise. The first flight will carry two tons of pineapples and government officials are working on obtaining the necessary permits for more products to be exported. The flights arrive bringing Russian tourists mainly visiting Dominican beach destinations.
