Haitians injured in hospital clash

Five Haitian workers were injured by shotgun pellets during a fight yesterday, Monday 3 February 2015 at the Dario Contreras Trauma Hospital that is in its final stages of remodeling. The injured workers were taken to the Ney Arias Lora hospital.

Fernando Lamarche from the Supervisory Office of Public Works (OISOE) denied that the problem was linked to lack of payment, as the workers told the press.

He said that the problem began when they told the workers that there would be a reduction in personnel as the work was nearly finished. He said that of the 350 workers they now only needed 100 to finish the construction.

One of the hospital employees, who was there when the argument started, said that one of the Haitian workers tried to assault the engineer who had the list of the workers who were going to be dismissed. A security guard intervened and then the worker tried to attack him as well. Then, a second security guard started shooting.

The entrance to the Dario Contreras Hospital site has now been militarized to prevent future clashes.
