Army boosts border patrols

Reinforced border patrols at the border with Haiti prevented the entry of 26,000 migrants in January, or about 1,000 per day. Major General Jose Eugenio Matos de la Cruz of the Army says that the border security is being reinforced with new checkpoints on the 300-km long border.

There are only four legal entry points at present. In an interview with Diario Libre, Matos de la Cruz says that patrols now operate 24 hours a day and that everyone’s cooperation is needed for them to be effective. He said that some Haitians were now throwing rocks at Dominican border agents, which did not occur in the past. He announced that camera surveillance would also be reinforced. Matos de la Cruz concluded by saying that they were implementing these measures according to the law and without mistreating the would-be illegal immigrants.
